Hi,

Just about to get my shimano m761 cranks powder coated but is there anything I need to be wary of?

With the drive side arm being attached to the axle I presume some masking etc is required of said axle and usual threads for peddles and bolts.

Has anyone done this who can give me some pointers to not wreck my cranks!

Thanks

Re:

Powder coat can be pretty thick, I would mask the chainring bolt holes and possibly the surface where the chainrings fit onto or touch the spider, if you see what I mean.

Re: powdercoating hollowtech cranks

Thanks, good tip about tabs for chainrings. Are there any rubber seals hiding anywhere?

Re:

These are coated by cermikoat in the states. There are some really good looking xtr's on their website but the M760's like mine look great! Hope powder coat will give me something similar but cheaper!

The link isnt working. For me at least.

Very nice indeed. It makes a real difference.
Its just a shame the standard coating is normally prone to wear and it makes the cranks look really poo :?

But what are you going to do about the decal ?
I ask as ive been figuring a way of achieving it in pretty good facsimile

I would think that they are screen printed on in Shimanoland then lacquered over the top.
Theres such a thing as transfer lettering, which is available in very small sized. You lay on each letter at a time , rub gently and hope it sticks .

Which ive just tried and its not adhering

dyna-ti have tweaked the link and now works.

Yeah black cranks are just the worse for looking awful after a while especially shimano XT! Shame to hear your transfers are not adhering. Is the surface totally clean?

My plan for decals and to reduce wear is either to get Gil M to do me some custom decals and then Ill cut and fit some helicopter tape to size to protect them. Or Ill get slik graphics to do the whole job. Although they do have their logo on which will spoil the look a bit. Ideas and links below.

But I am quite tempted by these but things would start getting expensive!

Two things
There's a small rubber seal on the drive side crank on *some* models, round the axle. There may be a duplicate on the non drive side.

How hot is your powder coater going to get it? Top end of powder coating is pretty close to the bottom end of heat treatment temps for some aluminum grades. Gotta be careful.

Re:

Just to contribute to the pool of knowledge on here:

When I had some XTR cranks powder coated I fitted some old bent pedal axles to keep the threads clear, used tape around the splines and was sure to remove the black spacer on the non drive side that goes between the two bolts, finally using two "sacrificial" bolts to preserve their threads.

The dye in Gils decals is good for 160 degrees whilst my powder coaters ovens cook at between 180 and 200 degrees, so it's worth checking.

Hope this helps and looking forward to pics. :)

Thanks shedobits that's good advice. As usual now on the back burner after i got some new Marzocchi marathons needing work and cash.

I may go silver again as with the new black bolts it all looks good
