Powder coating prices and is it any good

not sure if it's an issue for you but the powdercoat does add up to 1/2lb in weight to your frame (more than spray paint would).

I thought it would weigh more my frames very light so hope its not to heavy

would the finish last longer then spraying ie wont chip

The very best price i had for a spray job was £65 and the finish didn't last that long but still looks good on my steel work bike

I can recommend 'Triple S' in Bingley, Yorkshire, http://www.triple-s.co.uk/ who are power-coating specialists. They are not cheap (although you generally get what you pay for) - cost me £85 for frame, forks and stem recently, but the result is excellent. They'll shot-blast the frame and mask off all threads, bottom bracket, cage bosses etc before painting. Turnaround time is about a week.

Have a look at my build history for my Al-mega DX. It was powder coated by a local company to me who are very good and appreciate the threads and take care to cover them, or as prevoiusly said use old parts to hide the threads.

Mine was £50, but that is for blasting and preparing followed by a base coat of silver, then white with green in places, a very time consuming awkward paint job, but worth it in the end.

Go for the powder option, harder wearing and looks as good, if done by a decent firm.

Can also recommend these chaps. They did my Clockwork and the finish is superb. Cost me £60 for the frame but for that all I had to do was drop it off with the old paint on. They did everything else and even made sure no paint got where it shouldn't.

I had my Claud Butler ARC blasted and powdercoated and the finish was pretty good. It was nearly a decade ago, though.

What you have to remember is that a) the blasting medium goes everywhere and can wreck bb threads if they aren't masked off properly, and b) powdercoating is quite a lot thicker than paint so it may have to be removed from some mating surfaces, like the swinging arm pivot on a FS frame, before reassembly.

The best way to find a reputable powdercoater is by word of mouth. Just 'cos Joe Bloggs does it to gates and trailers, down on the industrial estate, doesn't mean he has the skill to do a bike frame.
Asking at a back-street motorbike shop can help as well- lots of bikers have their frames powdercoated.

i used the scrap BB cups/Headset Cups and bolts in every hole technique
once done i just removed them
