What a wonderful thread!
I have had a long love affair with hardtails, especially those with a longer fork and capable of going a little bit faster than a flimsy xc bike. I'm just trying to see what pics iv got on the 'puter, and scouring photobucket as I must have posted some before.
One of the first I had was a budget build way back in 2001, done mostly with parts I had laying around, and hanging on a £30 saracen frame from a mail order supplier.
Nope. Can't find a pic. :/ It was a white frame with the round top tube and big fat oval down tube, and the headtube gussets with the 's' logo stamped in. Red and black logos.
Later, around 2002 I bought this
2001 Cove Tightee., I still have it although it is currently disassembled.
When that was retired, I treated myself to a new singlespeed, but never really gelled with it. It was a lovely bike, built with all of the best parts, but lacked that special something.
This is my curtis hardtail, it's only 100mm at the front so I'm not entirely sure it deserves to be in the thread. It is good fun to ride, but rarely gets used nowadays.
The last few hardtail 'mountain bikes' I have had have been reasonably long travel, I find this is my happy medium. A hardtail with 130-140mm travel, but a comfy riding position for up/along/down, that I can ride for short blasts and longer rides and trail centres.
The first was this charge Duster, but its geometry didn't like longer forks, the longest I could get away with was 120mm, any more and it would flop from side to side at low speed, especially climbing. It was fine, perfect infact at 110mm, but I wanted more.
All of the parts were transferred over to the
Cotic soul. This was better, but still handled best at 120mm.
For a short while I had two more Coves, both Stiffies. The first was a blue 2001/2002 model, round tubes, no gussets. This I still have in the loft. No pics tho. The second was a 2008 white one, I sold this to a friend, he regularly falls off of/crashes it. I like it, I get to ride it still every now and again, it is set at 130mm and is the perfect trail bike. Please excuse the instagram pic, it's the only one I have.
The
Yeti. Not sure about this one, I think it was a touch too big for me. Travel was 140mm.
The
Lynskey. It's now sold, but I have ordered another.
And, the
current singlespeed.
Currently with 130mm forks, next time I service them I will up them to 140mm, just to see how it rides.
Next up, is a new Lynskey. The new models are with a proper tapered headtube, so I am planning a recessed headset cup that should allow me another 5-10mm of fork travel without changing the geometry. I'll start a thread when it arrives.
