I've heard that, in the 90s, Wilderness Trail Bikes famously suggested to their customers that they rub a little bit of dirt, with fine sand content, into the grease on the seatpost, before inserting it into the seat tube. Most people were reluctant to do it as you can imagine, but those who did swore that it worked perfectly and prevented slipping.
