According to my train app you take the train to Gatwick, and then from Gatwick get the train to Angmering and get off at Shoreham By Sea

I think I could only do one way. Especially after the battering I expect to give myself over new year!! Has anyone considered starting at Guildford and working our way back??

TBH I could do either direction but would be easier for me to train down to coast then ride home via Guildford.
If there are enough nutters/takers, then I could go both ways myself. Directions that is.
