Popping my fixie cherry

I ran my track bike all winter without a lockring. But that's on the track, with a biggish gear and no requirement to stop in a hurry. On the road I'd definitely use a lockring. I'd also use brakes - riding brakeless on the road is, IMO, mental.

Yes please do use a lockring if going the fixed route. They're available for a fiver too so why wouldn't you.

Research now complete. It's going to be SS for complexity/frame/cost reasons. Don't have much £££ to spend on this

Thanks all for the inputs:

Sourced so far:
- bontrager 4 arm cranks
- 68mm Isis bb truvativ

Need:
- chainring
- slimline bolts
- tensioner
- chain
- rear sprocket
- spacers
- rear wheel

I keep hearing surly are the best brand. Anyone got any suggestions where best to buy the required ss stuff?

Thanks ;)

So it'll just be SS now? still good fun, but look out for an old frame with the 'right' dropouts; one day you could build a fixie & they're more fun. For the brakes: a low geared dirt bike doesn't need one, though it can be useful for more technical sections. A streetracer only needs a front, but a long range fixie should have 2, & mudguards! (mine does, legs get tired of braking after the first 100 or so)

Or try VeloSolo, they carry Andel who make the stuff for Surly as well as their ownbrand stuff, they also do rather nice spacer kits too, like on my Singular.

Take a look at the VeloSolo FAQs and look at FAQs 5&6 which show how they use a bolt on cog on a disc hub to give a freewheel/fixed flip/flop option

Yes just SS now. Frame has verticals so I think a chain tensioner is the only option

Yum
That looks great.
How do you not have a tension device on that given the vertical dropouts? Special hub/bb?

Forward components do an EBB that fits in a standard sized shell but I dont think they are cheap which would allow SS or Fixed.

An Ebb gives much cleaner lines to the bike less to get snagged on undergrowth and does seem to be the prefered way of doing things for higher end SS bikes like Niner and some of the other US boutique 29er frame makers, and of course Singluar here in the UK.

Sorry just noticed your post yes its an eccentric bb, makes life really easy. And to Singulars credit they use Phil Wood
