poncing around in Lycra

I ride to work every day. In Lycra. It's comfortable, certainly more so than my work clothes would be. Don't understand your point.
I don't ride through red lights and I despise those that do. Or don't use lights.

Mike
All of those points are the same for me.

Plus, on top of that, I wear through the crotch of a pair of normal cotton shorts or jeans in around 5-6 commutes (100-120 miles) whereas my winter tights are in their 6th year now and still going strong. Normal clothes just aren't strong enough and, besides, I'd stink if I wore the same ones at work that I commuted in.

Re:

Also to add, cycle kit dries out a lot quicker than other clothing, which has been useful for the last couple of weeks! It dries out fast in my new lorry :D
Imagine the chafing i would get from riding ten miles to/from work! A no-brainer for me

Ohhh, that takes me back to the late 1980's and my first ever MTB, riding around the woods and getting wet in jeans and a t shirt.

You only do it the once.

Next stop (once the wounds had stopped weeping) was the local bike shop and some lycra shorts and Ron Hill tracksters.

Re:

Why ? Comfort and the fact that I would change into work clothes anyway to get out of sweaty kit. Lycra washes and dries faster than casual kit. Riding a bike gently enough to the point of not getting hot and sweaty seems a waste of getting the bike out of the shed.
My bike kit is bright and conspicuous, my work kit isn't.
I don' t want to work all day in wet kit either so a change is needed.

Loving the sardonic tone of some of the replies! :p

Do find it's odd that it's degenerated into 'Lycra vs office wear' as a defence of Lycra though!
Other cycling wear IS available besides lycra.. which I believe was a part of the original point questioning its necessity.
