My experience of those type of bars is that they position the hoods in such a way that I found them too uncomfortable to use. (I tend to ride on the hoods when using drop bars)
For that reason, I would choose wide shallow drop / reach bars without significant flare for gravel bike type duties. Or of course flat bars with bar ends
Pretty sure I have a set knocking about somewhere, I'll have a look when I get in tomorrow.
I have to be honest though, my experience is much the same as @Takingabreak. Bloody uncomfortable.
I borrowed a gravel bike for a few days, which had flared bars on, they seemed far more comfortable than the last set of conventional drops i used. The old style i found i never used the drops as they were far too far away. Plus i quite liked my hands at an angle on the hoods with the flares...rather than straight up.
Seems choices for 25.4 clamp flared bars are a bit scarce....those midges seem to fit the bill.
You got to remember im skeletal mutant these days so what's normal for most is way out for me!
Tbh, im having a bit of fun fiddling round with my old 26" bikes....before the last of them (only 2 left) sadly all go up for sale (Dont panic, im keeping my original 89 team marin for nostalgia sakes) as I really can't ride small frames any more.
I'll dig the bars out later, they're somewhere in the pile.
Everything is worth trying once. I might not have got on with them but obviously that doesn't mean you won't.
Found them.
There's a bit of scratching here and there, mainly on the inside of the drops from getting them through a stem they had no business going through. Also a bit of bar tape residue. Otherwise good.
