Picked up this beautiful Peugeot 753 Pro yesterday 52cm

It seems you can't own a Peugeot, talk about one or lust after one without someone lining up to tell you they're not good enough or somehow slating the marque. Even on a thread championing this very sweet 753 bike!

Seems they're not good enough for serious bike snobs. Well I've got a Peugeot Triathlon in 501 and it rides better than some so called artisan built steeds. And I woud love one of these 753 machines.

I think they're much more desirable than a 753 SBDU which personally I find very overrated. My only concern about owning one would be the finish on the paint and the chrome. I've seen quite a few well rusted 753 versions, particularly the chrome work.

The two french race bikes I would like to own would be the 753 Perthus and their own version of the carbon Vitus (Peugeot PY10FC) with the oversized lugs which Robert Millar rode to many a victory.

I don't know what happened to Peugeot after the late 80's but they definitely dropped the ball.
The big European brands like Peugeot and Raleigh had to race down to the bottom of the barrel to try to find adequate demand for their products to keep the vast factories open and workforce employed.

...And when the market picked up again with MTBs, it was a hindrance to be a brand your dad or grandad might have owned.

Both made some excellent bikes, but are commonly associated with the huge volume of almost-bsos they knocked out 85 on😪

I think BSO might be a bit on the harsh side for a carbolite 103 lovely but othewise totally agree. In the UK there seemed to be some proto Europhobic rage that they displaced Raleigh's dominance in the 80s by flooding every Halfords branch with their wares and selling boatloads of bikes. Their entry level bikes were far better value than Raleighs.

I've had several Peugeots over the years and own a 1979 UE8 which I've just rebuilt. They have all been excellent bicycles which is why I keep buying them 😁

Peugeot's graphic design and typefaces from this period are absolutely definitive.
As a result, a basic carbolite bike with huret and maillard, chromed Rims, suicide levers is a quick seller.
100%. So good at capturing the zeitgeist that anybody who wanted to sell had to somehow stick those fading intensity bands on their tubes. Falcon, Holdsworth, Puch to name a few tried to bask in the reflected glory. Apparently the bands came from their car rally teams and kind of filtered down across all Peugeot products.

I totally concur with Bikeworkshop, the threat from the far East killed the quality after the 80's although I cant speak of or have any interest in the modern stuff. The likes of Peugeot and Raleigh couldn't compete with the cheap labour costs and so the cost cutting, downgrading and sponsorship of their own pro teams died. As for rusty wrecks I've owned and restored dozens of Pugs ( a few occasionally documented on RB ) and like any bike totally depends how the bike has been stored and cared for , I never respray , two below in recent months ( the FDC is now sold and moved back to France ) whilst the honestly original PY10 is still very nicely presented with its 43 year old paint and chrome and currently for sale .
