The D5000 has great specs, has the same sensor as the D90.

I switched early this year from a D200 to a D90 and asked myself why i hadn't done that earlier. Usable iso up to 3200!, built in AF motor (which the D5000 lacks)

Get a nice alroundlens with it (18-135) to start with or if you really want quality a 50mm, 35mm or 85mm prime.

I have a Nikon D70, have owned it since it first came out, a superb camera let down by the fact there is no provision for a cable release, annoying but I can get around it and have many a time, grrrr, stupid transmitter.

But if you want to go for a system, then either Canon or Nikon, they are just about as good as each other. I only got Nikon because the then Digital rebel did not feel so good in my hands. But I also run a Canon S70 as a back up to my Nikon so brand wise, I am not loyal and will not push either over the other, as it is all down to how what you choose feels comfortable in your hands. Swings and roundabouts as they say.

But there are other makes that are worthy of attention, as mentioned, Pentax, Olympus and Fuji are worth looking at, but again it is all down to what you need and how far you envisage going with the DSLR route.

Yeah, and don't be conned by the megapixel race, as megapixels are really just salesman talk. Think how big you are likely to print a picture and how big that picture is you have to step back further to take it all in thus rendering a myriad of megapixels , really a waste of time.

My D70 runs 6 megapixels and the S70 7 megapixels, I can't see the difference and what I have has served me so well so far, why jump into the megapixel race.

But a website worth a look, Ken Rockwell knows his stuff ;

LOL! The owner of the Salsa (brother of the guy I inherited my DeKerf frame from) was taking pics w. his P&S.

Definately don't discount second hand. The way the amateur photography market has boomed since the digital (ahem) revolution, has meant perfectly good kit being dashed in in favour of the same thing with an 's' or an 'x' on the end of it's name.

This place (linked below) is utterly trustworthy, offers guarantees and pretty much is the benchmark for 2nd hand prices.

Don't get hung up on Pega Mixel count. It's all smoke and mirrors and numbers.

Don't get too hung up on 'learning'. Go out and play. Look. See. Imagine. Enjoy.

Do have fun.

:D

Nikon e series lens off my FG sitting on the D3000

Will take pictures in manual - havent tried any just in case I bugger something up.

If you were going to bugger anything up you would have done so fitting the lens, there are no issues with fitting AiS lenses to these cameras, it'll be fine. The E series were all AiS. The only issue you will have is that of metering. You'll have to use either a hand held meter, stop down metering or use your head and the good old sunny 16 rule.

Cracking lens the 50mm f1.8s E series or otherwise. They make smashing portrait lenses on DX sensor bodies for buttons money. You'll be blown away by the sharpness and lack of distortion compared witht he kit lens.

Happy playing!
