Peugeot Comete Sprint

Hey all,

I was gifted my grandads beautiful Peugeot Comete Sprint bike which he rode around the UK for many years....

I am looking to upgrade / update certain parts of the bike whilst still retaining that classic look.

I am extremely new to the upgrade process but willing to learn!

Looking for recommendations of what to upgrade and to what if possible please! Any help is a big help.

The Comete is a nice example. The only thing I would change on it is perhaps the brakes. A lot of modern choices, but probably Shimano is your best bet

Thank you mate, do I need to look for "older style" brakes or have things not changed as much as I imagine in that area?

Entry level Shimano brakes are very good quality. Either that or a vintage pair of Exage or 105, probably about the same for cost. You've lucked out with the saddle though, a leather saddle on a bike this vintage is a proper bonus ball 👍
 
You probably need a new brake bolt, newer style brakes have recessed nuts while older ones have non recessed ones. I would have a look at the chain, chainrings and freewheel. Other than that, with luck most things can be used again. Tyres are easiest replaced. Some nice supple Vittoria or Challenge will bring more comfort. Very nice Peugeot by the way.
 
The Comete was sold in 1987-89 in the UK I believe. From the looks it doesn't look too broke!

The fork should have a recessed allen key type brake fixing - the nut on there now is most likely over an adapter.

You should be able to fit some newer, allen key brakes. I would think about moving away from those flexy Weinmann calipers and levers and maybe fit some better period correct items (Mavic SSC would look the b0ll0cks, or failing that Shimano 600 6400/ Dura Ace 7400, Campagnolo C-Record). You may be limited though as you might need <57mm drop calipers.

New tyres and some bartape and jobs a good'un.

That's a nice looking bike. Have you been for a ride on it yet?
I would start by looking at the basics ie. handlebar tape, cables, saddle (if you find it comfy then keep it), tyres & tubes, chain etc.
If you do want to change the brakes then some period 105 or 600/ulegra might suit and not break the bank.

Thanks! Rides really smooth considering it's been sat in a garage for 30+ years... my grandad maintained it well.

It's in beautiful condition thanks to my grandad owning a bike shop in his early years!
