pedal threads, confused.

Interesting re the bearings - I've often wondered this too

On the face of it - it looks like lewis's suspicions would be correct. Another great bicycle conundrum resolved!

What is the explanation for the pedal threads having to be the opposite way round from the bottom bracket threrads?

It's the same thing, the crank axle is rotating clockwise (drive side) so the cup is pushed anti-clockwise tightening it in the frame.

'aint physics brilliant!

Are you sure? :? It's been a while sinse I last removed a BB but I'd swear it's a left handed thread on the drive side.

Oh I don't know I'm confusing myself now..................I blame lewis for asking the question in the first place

Hang on, you're correct - drive side BB thread is LH / anticlockwise

As I understood it, the thread direction in the pedals and BB cups was so that if the bearings seized the action of rotating the cranks would unwind the pedals/cups from the frame as opposed to tightening them in further to the point of damage. In aluminium alloy cranks and frames tightening the threads too much would strip the thread. Better the pedals fall off than they bugger the cranks etc

remember, the crank is turning on the axle, not the bb casing, there are bearings between the axle & bb casing to re-reverse things!!
