Out of interest does the 'pay it forward' work any differently to the karma system we have here?

It's different term for the same thing John. Sort of like your boot vs. our trunk, or lorrie vs. truck. There was a movie starring that obnoxious little Haley Joel Osment git (I see dead people!) called Pay It Forward in which he started a karma movement, and the term stuck over here.
