Personally I love it. Not for everyone, but in the guitar world folks pay the big money for it. So much that there is a huge amount of effort made in faking it.

I once was thrown off and banned from a classic car forum because I said one mans idea of patina is another mans idea of neglect
The car in point was a rusty shed but the poster was one of the "in crowd" and his cronies took offence at my opinions.

I still believe to this day that patina is overused to hide neglect as in my mind worn or sun bleached paint is patina but rust is neglect

You should visit RatRodBikes. Patina, and faux-tina are elevated to an art form. To counter your perspective, here's one I did. Started off with a brand new, never ridden cruiser, no neglect whatsoever. No speed holes either

Here's how it ended

That's turned out sharp, I spotted the 10mm socket you might have mislaid 😉 (cracking touch that is)

Yes, that socket upset quite a few viewers. I had something like 11 at the time. The stock had dwindled considerably since. But I'll always have a spare one hanging on the garage wall

Doesn't do it for me really. A little bit from use I can live with but if it gets too bad it's going, I certainly wouldn't create it. Yet another case of each to their own. :)

I think also it depends where it's come from. If I'd owned the bike from new and the battle damage was all mine, then that's very different to buying a crusty old frame. It tells your story. :)
