Pace RC53 1 1/8 - 1inch Problem

I've bought some RC35 Forks, that have a 1-1/8 steerer tube at the moment, I ordered from Pace the 1" steerer and they also sent a 1" to 1-1/8 space, I've taken parts to my LBS to have the steerer tube cut and a headset removed and a new headset fitted, they have now said that the 1" steerer tube is too loose and the spacer isn't the right size and is too small. I am wondering wether Pace didn't send the spacer and that the small ring around the steerer tube is a Crown Collar? I spoke to Pace, and they have said that the older RC35 cannot be adapted to fit a 1" steerer. Is this correct? i've attached pictures of the forks, if anyone can identify if these are the older forks, and if thats the problem. The steerer tube in the pictures is the 1-1/8.

The "Spacer" they sent seemed to clip over a ring on the bottom of the steerer tube, and was not very thick, like a coke can thickness, and also had holes around the sides, i know vague description but, the parts are still with the LBS at the moment.

Just want to see if i've ordered wrong parts or if the forks are incompatible with my bike, or if i've been sent the wrong bits!

Cheers for any help

It sounds like they have sent you the kit for later RC35 MXCD type forks.

On these the steerers can be switched.

On the slightly earlier version like yours, I think the crowns are size specific, so you would need an entire new crown.

You can of course then use your new steerer to fit to the crown, so it's not necessarily a wasted purchase.

Not sure how easy you will find it getting a new crown. I suggest contacting 'justbackdated' on here as he has lots of Pace spares.

If not, a wanted ad might reveal something.

Cheers,

thanks for the reply, just got off the phone to pace, and they seem to think the same, that i'd need a new crown. They're checking if they have one in stock. Bit frustrated with them, as they didn't mention this when i purchased the parts, otherwise i'd of bought it all at the same time! Grr :x

Hi Andy,
just replied to your PM :D

The fork is a 1994 RC35 XCS and the shim you have sounds like the one I have mentioned, the shim should sit in the crown and steerer with the circlip at the base should fit inside it with the outer flange of the shim tight against the underside of the crown. Nothing else should be required and you do not need to change your crown.

Some of the RC35 crowns have a well in the top for the crown race collar specific to that steerer size to sit in, if yours has this I can make a shim to fill the well to give a base for the crown race collar.

Send the fork and parts to me and I will fit it all correctly for you if you like.
cheers :D
