A few people have asked 'what is the Old World MTB Championships', so here's a brief description and preview of the timetable:

The OWMTBC idea was conceived when there were no Retrobike Calendar events and no UK organisers recognising our increasing presence. We had read about events like Keyesville and the Cackalackay Cup in America and thought it was time to create something to recognise the rising global interest in all things retro MTB.

So in September of last year, we held the first event in north Holland with the help of Mel and Roy, hosting 8 nationalities of riders and an awesome selection of vintage and retro bikes. They were all put through their paces with a variety of challenges, including riding a Dutch bakfiets cargo bike around a trials course! The winner was decided by performances and points scored throughout the day and the victor was in doubt right up until the scorers announced the result at the prizegiving. There were 10 other category winners including 'Gentleman Rider', 'Happy Trails' and 'Best International Team' - we're pleased to be able to reveal that these 2009 winners will be coming to the UK to defend their titles!

The timetable for this year's event is shaping up like this:

Friday afternoon/evening - social ride; welcome BBQ, Alpinestars/MS Racing display; MTB Q and A with a world class rider; Jenga competition; retro pub quiz; beer....

Saturday - paired trials challenge; lunch; bike and rider 'scrutineering'; XC paired hillclimb; XC special stages; prizegiving; beer...

Sunday - social rides

In summary - it's not a race, more of an organised retro party with some decent bike challenges to entertain and absorb you and discover our Champion! North Wales provides some of the best riding terrain we've experienced, so everyone is guaranteed a memorable weekend!

BREAKING NEWS 4

Those true retro-spirited folk at Orange have come good for the riders of OWMTBC 2010! Not only are they bringing five classic race bikes including a Tushingham, they're donating a unique 'Pure7' frame to the prize fund, which is the new steel hardtail they are bringing out for 2011 -described as a ‘return to the roots’ style frame! They've also been digging around in the office/factory and found a couple of random giveaways, old brake levers and seatposts...

They also plan to write up a little news piece for the website and hopefully take some video interviews with the various folk at the event - they imagine it will be a 'comedy video which makes the event look as fun and alternative' - as if..... ;)

So all you Orange-fixated OW folk are in for a treat!

Friday evening arrivees - we will be camped out in the corner of the park, opposite the railway station - look for banners, a tent and lots of old bikes... We'll be setting up from 5pm - looking to have everyone in place by 6pm. The over to Glan Aber for the Alpinestars evening and other stuff...

Saturday arrivals - registration will be over breakfast or in the Glan Aber Residents Lounge from 9.30-10.30.

First event is the Paired Shopper Trials which will start around 11am.

When in doubt meet at the Glan Aber Hotel - either in the bar at the back or the carpark (at the back too).

We expect the riding to be done and dusted by 5pm with prize giving, Retrobike Pub Quiz and after party in the Glan Aber from 8pm.

See you there!
