Oryginal or fake Gios Torino?

Chris Harry

Retro Newbie
Dear all

I’m new on the forum. My name is Chris and I’m looking for help in defining the brand of the classic road bike.
I’ve bought it in December in Poland for 70 pounds. I was told it is Gios, but when I started to service it I also started to have doubts.
The challenge: the frame - lugs have unusual shape for Gios, and cable are routed on top tube with full rings. Moreover the colour is not matching any Gios official guidelines.
I’m aware that handlebars and Shimano Golden Arrow might be not oryginal, but the main question is about frame brand.
I’d like to give it a new look, so any help is appreciated. Thanks!! IMG_8601.jpeg

Welcome to the forum!

Fine job with the photos.

Resembles no GIOS example have ever seen...and have been at it for over fifty year...

Typically a GIOS frame will have some signature points such as seat stay caps, fork crown, shell cutouts, etc.

Transfers appear to be aftermarket.

Another reader may have some ideas as to what it is.

Thank you!

Are there any markings on the bottom bracket shell? A serial number perhaps? What is the diameter of the seat post?

It looks like a well-made but rather generic mid-range frame. One clue might be the fork crown. Not a very common shape. I don't recall having seen it before.

The 105 'Golden Arrow' group is really nice. That alone is worth the 70 quid, IMO.

Enjoy the bike!

Hey! Thanks for help! This is probably the serial number

Sorry for a photo quality.

I bought it mainly because the Shimano Golden Arrow is in great shape. As well as BB and Campagnolo headset.

It is hard to believe that someone made this bike a fake Gios, and put a great hardware like this, isn’t it?
Just from touch and feel the frame steel looks good. I have found quite close tubing on Allegro Swiss bike with Reynolds 531.

The other option (hard to believe) is that this one is from Japan. As Gios was divided in 1970s into GIOS and Gios Torino. The Japanese GIOS is super rare in Europe. But this, as mentioned, is rather hard to be true.

Any other ideas of possible brands?

serial format is consistent with one employed by the Cesare Rizzato firm

possible it may be one of their products...

do not wish to assert an identification

Dang. Age trumps beauty again.

As @juvela so subtly points out I must have seen that fork crown before. And indeed I have. On my very own Atala ...

Tubing is by Falck:

I wish I could say mine was cheaper than that faux GIOS ...

Dear Lord!!
this group is amazing! I’ve spent 10h yesterday to look for any similar frames. One post on this portal and BANG- I’m almost sure about the brand.
Thank you soooo much! I wish I could buy you a coffee or beer for all hints.
The mistery is still not solved, but I feel we are all close to the final.
