Orange X1 Pro Refit - constructive advice welcome

If the head tube was larger i.e. inch and a quarter you could easily reduce it to fit a smaller steerer - but as you head tube will only take an inch headset you’re boxed into a corner

If you went with Judy Hydracoils you could keep your existing steerer

How so? perhaps I’ve misunderstood but I wouldn’t have thought steerers could be swapped out.

Yeah of course you can swap the steerer - but only for another one of the same size and as you allude one inch is propper Retro which limits your choice in more modern forks

What I was suggesting is just replacing the old Judy’s with more modern version which have an open oil bath and still have 28mm stantions and compatible with your existing crown

Like above, you just swap out the whole steerer and crown unit. Or go Pace.

First of all welcome, and secondly good to see another X1 on the forum. I am not however sure its a Pro? (As a rule of thumb Pro Versions were Blue Frame with Grey Rear End, RS Versions Red Frame with White Rear End, even though all the PRO and RS bit denoted was the groupset!!, Orange have always been a bit unconventional with these bikes lol) I've owned pretty much all X1's from across the range and will put some links up below for you to peruse. Can't help you with the Shock side of things, I tend to run OG Strata on the rear and PACE on the front or Rock Shox. Give it some love and your X1 will provide many years of URT fun.

Just thought I'd post an update on where I'm at for anyone who's interested. The seasoned retro-fitters are right, PACE RC36 seem the best option for forks. Watched a few on eBay but couldn't part with the cash so i'll keep an eye out for future. Plumped for shite Zoom forks w. 1" steerer while the 'Judy's' went to a mate to see if the damper cartridge is any good & so worth keeping. Hope so, the Zoom are really shit. Needed a new headset too. Found an original stem on eBay, my 1st auction win! Ever! & got the 'new' Shimano XT shifter/brakes on, & they're f**kin great. & Thanks to RetroDecals for the...retro decals
