Just to confuse things even more, I just had a look at the 1997 archive and it seems the c16 came with a threaded headset in that year. The stem on this bike came on some of the other 97 Orange's. Also, the seat post and saddle are the same as on my old 1994/5 c16. By 97 they were using different saddles but the seat post looks the same :?

Maybe that's what it says in the catalogue, but I think they were built with aheadsets. The C16R that won the group test in the August 1997 MBR had an aheadset. "Class in the grass, we all loved the C16R"

It can't have been a 1998 model, because they went back to the Clockwork name for 98. In any case, the magazine would have been out in late June, and the test would have been carried out a few months before that, say roughly in the spring of 97.
