orange clockwork tubing

'On-One of the retro world'....  Don't think that's quite fair tbh.

Seem to remember Orange using some lower groupsets on the C16 so they could keep a bike at the £500 price bracket. They also said the quality of the lower groupsets had improved so were a viable option. You don't see many with anything lower then STX and by the time they were using it it had replaced LX in the Shimano line up. ;)

Small UK company with mass produced, much bought and wanted bikes of the era. Buy frame and equip it with your setup ?
Sounds very much like On-One to me.

I had a Prestige and a Clockwork, mates had the Alu's and I have absolutely nothing against them. Still would buy a Prestige in a nice black at 19" size, with Alu forks... then I could wear my Take The pith T-shirt again :)

I thought they dropped into the Alivio range ? (I class STX as LX replacement when LX morphed in to DX's shoes)

P.S. I think you need to find a Prestige to complete your line up :D

It's cheap tubing with a Tange brand in fact the lowest in their brand at the time, hence the price range of Clockworks

When i bought my clockwork frame[1999] it cost i think £300.the P7 was £400
I dont think theres that big a difference really :?

Plus- ;)
I dont believe there is any physically noticeable difference be it Tange,Reynolds, plain, double butted, triple butted quadruple butted with a twist,501,531,50000000000017
Steel rusts,alloy and Ti cracks

P7 is a different beast and nowt to do with Prestige ;) plus your talking 6 years later here ;)
and yes there is physically a difference in the feel of the frame.
Clockwork '93 F&F = £230 (~350 in todays money)
Prestige '93 F&F = £333 (500 in todays money)

Prestige was around 1/2lb lighter, didn't 'feel' as stiff, but felt better, swifter and less 'clunky/chuggy' to ride.
Though you wouldn't break a Clockwork, the Prestige on the other hand wasn't something you dropped against a lamppost.

Interesting to note that the stif ad says there is only a half pound difference in weight between the prestige and clockwork...

Perhaps the prestige feels a bit more nippy (never ridden one) but not as much diff weight wise as I'd have expected.

Maybe I'll hold off bidding on that ebay one down in dorset - clockwork will do just fine...

Just had a thought by 1993 or was it 1994 they move to Ultimate tubing in the Prestige frame ?

and yes a move from Infinity to Prestige taking lightest DB tubing then it 10 to 15% weight saving, so about 1/2lb if doing nothing fancy

I'll give you that but believe Orange's have always been classed as at least better then average where as On-Ones are chucked out as cheap frames with more thought put into the design then you'll usually find at the price point. :?

Am planning on getting another Prestige some time soon but will wait for the right one to turn up. First frame I got off RB was a Prestige and I couldn't believe how much thinner the tubes were compared to a Clockwork or P7. Never built it as I got hold of a complete Clockwork but it's defo an itch I need to scratch.
