Personally, I would be tempted to start with giving it a good clean and only replacing the broken shifter/gear cables. From what I can see of it, the groupset might not be worn out and the existing brakes will definitely do the job. That will give you enough to try it out and rekindle any love for it. Then if you don't like the ride, you can pass it on without too much invested.
