On-One Pompino

I'm building a pompetamine right now. I hated the logos as well, but instead of a total repaint, I got some custom stickers made to cover them up.

gunsha, never heard of before german brand/team/shop.
it was a little expensive and the lead time was long, but it's light and quite nice once it's been painted to match the frame.

Right. I've been Craigslisting my arse off the past week or so, selling off parts from the old Cannondale to fuel this new build. Met some fixie hipsters and a weird old guy that wanted to talk military vehicles.
My work has been rewarded, some new bling just rolled in...

Still pondering whether to have the frame bead-blasted and do a custom paint job, so the black CK headset isn't installed yet. Wrapped a couple of bands of foam around the steerer tube in the meantime.

That's coming along very nicely indeed. Nice choice of parts so far. What else do yo have in mind for it?

I'm holding off getting one for the time being, hoping that the prices drop again. On-One's prices fluctuate like crazy.

Looking forward to some more pictures.

Time for a little update.

After I finished the bike first time round, I had it set up as a Dingle Fixed using a Surly Dingle 17T/21T cog. Front rings were 44T and 39T, so this gave me a street gear of 44x17T and a trails gear of 39x21T.
Here's how the bike looked.

In the pics above I had briefly set the bike up on some old 700x23c slicks I had laying around, whilst waiting for the tyres I really wanted (Panaracer Pasela 700x32c Folding) to arrive at my LBS.

Had a lot of fun shredding the local trails on it, even descending Fixed was quite good fun when I was on dirt.
In the end though, I elected to fit a rear v-brake and turn the bike into a simpler SS rig, for the following reasons;
- The 32c tyres are central to the setup of the bike. They suit the nice wide H+Son TB14 rims, allow low-ish pressure and enable me to roll over all of LA's horrific broken-up roads.
- The bike is used in heavy traffic a lot, and I prefer to brake with my fingers instead of my knees. The tyres are too wide, grippy and expensive to be trying to whip-skid all over the place.
- Coasting down hills and bunny-hopping drain covers at 35mph never gets old.

Along the way, I realised a few other things about my original build;
- The saddle I had originally chosen was awful. Synthetic non-breathable cover, too narrow, too much padding. I retrimmed an old SLR Gel Flow at home and installed that instead.
- I like the look of fresh new cloth tape, but hate the feel. Even with Fizik Gel under it, it felt wrong. Synthetic cork over Gel is preferable to me.
- The 70mm stem I had installed was throwing the steering geometry way out, making the bike feel oddly unbalanced at low speed. I decided a combo of longer (100mm) stem & sliding the saddle forward would correct this, and it has.

Here's how the bike looks now.

The itch for a custom paint job had to be scratched. Never really took to the sparkly white frame, too pristine-looking.

I had an inferno orange GT Outpost back in 1992 so this is something of a tribute. In case you're new here, this is what the Outpost looked like:

I also chose to use an acid yellow from the ultimate GT of the era, the titanium Xizang.

All done with rattlecans, bar the black splatters which are opaque airbrush ink. Logos are all paint. Enjoyed doing this!

Re:

Update!
Pompino now lives on the East Coast, razzing around NYC.

It's gained a pair of 'fenders' which stay on all year round.
I stuck a little canti-stud-mounted rack on it, but later took it off because it was rubbish.

I bought it some nice flat BRITISH pedals

Also found some 700x34c knobbly 'cross tyres that fit under the mudguards, and geared the chainring down to 39T for winter

Ride this thing daily, rain or shine. Or snow.

Newest addition is a Wald basket, makes commutes and supermarket trips so much more pleasant.
