On One Parkwood

Another sucker falls victim to marketing hype! We are all so stupid

Ride report will be interesting.

Re:

So..

Went Haldon tonight, local trail Centre. Maiden voyage.

The red trail is quite stoney and fairly technical and the parkwood breezed through it all./ The onza lynx tyres were absolutely superb, best tyres I have had for some time albeit a small test of 12 miles!

Didn't know what size stem so plumped for 50, certainly keeps the front from being slows, that and the nicely shaped bars. Controls topped with Odi ruffians and must say I was really happy with dimensions. Wide bars take some getting used to and I might cut them down but for a while at least they stay.

On the ups the bike grips really well, the slack head angle actually outs your arse back and that suits me. For the flats and fire road type bits the big wheels are like riding a road bike in a way, in that once they get going you keep speed in bits that you start pedaling hard in on 26er. Technical or not, that's how it feels.

The forks are rock shox recons at 120, my first maxle forks. Wow. So stiff, big legs so super stiff and no wandering at all. Point and there go where you want even under load. The forks themselves are like my bro's old Reba's.. Super super flush.

On the downhill the bike ploughs through literally anything, whilst still popping up and even (little) jumping with ease. Not weighed but its lighter than my brother's steel 26" genesis!

Not much more to add.. The Deore 2 x 10 groupset is superb. Works great with a nice action. Improvement on Deore of a few years ago, and clutch rear mech is great.

Only badpoint was this..

Looks rubbish in the light and pretty uncomfortable. Madison flux fitting on the weekend!

Overall, the bike was just a blast. So much fun to ride. And that's what its about hey..

Re:

Wont bore people too much but deore kit is wonderful isn't it?

Brakes off here for £45 sold as fitted and taken off (available from merlin also for £75 front and rear)

To start with for the first few miles, very little braking, I was almost able to pull back to the bars and thought that these weren't really bedded in, although they were so weak I was a little worried. A few miles in they improved and after about 40 minutes riding I can say they are the best brakes I have had (from not too many admittedly). Certainly better than any avids i've used before, an improvement over my older deore, and better than my riding pals very expensive formula brakes. They are so powerful i'm amazed. Can't ever see myself buying higher up the range to be honest, more than I will ever use.

I'm runnign 180 front and 160 rear rotors by the way.

Looks good mate, I've been building a 45650b over the last 2 months, I have all the parts but my broken hand in a hideous cast is stopping me from finishing it! :-(

Re:

Ahhh mare. Be interested to know what its like when built.

Well ive only been on this twice. I had the snip last weekend gone so no riding for a week!

Re:

Ah the joys of the snip :D :D
Nice looking bike mate, i have managed to convince myself that i am too short for a 29er thank god :D
Glad you didn't opt for Sram drivetrain (i would have piped up earlier but only just spooted this thread). I know Neil has a high opinion of there stuff but in my experience the rear mechs are a weak point with the area around the main pivot being made of cheese ;)
