On balance, I still am not a fan of e-bikes (previously known as ‘I just don’t get E bikes’)

It could very well be that the older populations here are just suffering much more greatly as they literally lived their lives soaked in schnapps, pork fat and remoulade and come 67 they are literally a mere dissolved blob of red sausage patriotism and pastry.

I fixed an old friend's 2014 ebike (benelli?) as it was no longer charging. It had Panasonic batteries that were still good as the previous owner hardly used it but for some reason the charge circuit had failed.

He freely admits that he is a fat tubster and it gets him out and about at a regulated 16nph so he doesn't have to drive his smelly old mitsubishi L200

For me that's a win win

Across the road from my work is a Greggss. There are multiple delivery guys on unregulated 30mph+ bikes weaving in and out of the traffic and onto the path

That's where it fails a bit. The positives can be argued that it's less and less car/ moped journeys but these are uninsured vehicles. There is no regulation if an accident is caused by one of these guys and they are killed or they seriously injure someone

Products and the technologies are outpacing the laws and whomever makes it into government needs to think fast before that escooter knocks them down

there are many more cars able to break any speed limits and many more unregistered, untested and illegal on the roads than probably any of the safer (for others) alternatives.
Probably why they don't bother with them.

I'm all for a derestricted Motability meetup, sound a laff.
Like a modern day mod-moped meet.

The bad apples are just as much a problem for the Ebike community as they are for everyone else. Bans ,restriction, targeted enforcement. Every time some ones asks me how to make a Stealth Ebike to avoid scrutiny I tell them stealth is a riding style. I have a fast ebike. I get passed in stupid and unsafe ways by Ebikes all the time. Often older riders (maybe not older than me, but "older" in general). The funny thing is I never see the same one twice???
Think about building a stealthy Ebike (with skinny tire so it can't stop) going down a sidewalk at 30mph.
Where I ride the lawless motor vehicle operators are such a big problem that E bikes pretty much get ignored. Lucky me! I try my best not to share the road with those nitwits. The best way to do that is respect the other users of other options. Yield to pedestrins, blend with pedal bikes, and dismount for horses ( an actual thing here). Also in 20mph winds off the ocean give a pedal cyclist a draft to ride in.

If an E- bike is illegal ie the assist goes over the legal limit then the police should confiscate them the same as uninsured or unlicensed drivers.

Would like to see the so called statistics that show pensioners have more E-bike crashes.
Its hard to find the specific one I was referring to and translating can be a bit iffy but here's one that shows that half of the accidents on ebikes in 2018 were people over the age of 54 and especially the category of 55 to 64 showed a high number of accidents, the blue line refers to ebikes, the green normal pushbikes. This is from dst, the official Danish statistics bank.

It also shows an interesting tendency, in which ebikes tend to be in accidents where more people are involved, suggesting ebikes crashes are of a more serious nature than push bikes

As you can tell ebikes ridden by elderly people tend to have more people getting involved in the accident, suggesting their crashes are more severe than the rest of the population.

Am I correct in saying your ebike is modified to take past the legal limit?

If so , why?

Genuinely interested to hear why from users point of view.
