On balance, I still am not a fan of e-bikes (previously known as ‘I just don’t get E bikes’)

Cambridge 9am tuesday.

Unregulated e-bike food delivery guy. Female student.
Bike comes round corner at high speed, hits female and knocks her over, bad impact on the ground.
Rider gets himself together and hightails off at high speed.
All caught on camera at nearby office building.
Security staff refuse to access footage by senior staff who saw collision, on 'data protection grounds'.

Now, of course it could have been a pedal cyclist. But these unregulated e-bike cyclists have started off knowing they are breaking the law and their overall behaviour has then become as if there is no traffic law....
Would need police to get footage.

I don’t get lots of things,stamp collectors,water skiers,potholers,people who eat cake,trumpet players ,and a bunch of others.Who cares,if you don’t get it you don’t get it.
Move on

I didn’t use the term engine deliberately.

Yes cars have motors. If not what does an electric car have to propel it?

The law hasn’t caught up with electric motors /vehicles yet. But it will , and thankfully rid the roads of de-restricted E bikes and such.
Cars have engines. Electric cars have motors. Hybrids have both. I didn't make the rules  . No arguing on the internet will ever change those facts. However, if you'd like to continue debating semantics I really don't care enough to continue with you. So you win ;)

Maybe the laws haven't in the UK as I am assuming by all your posts. In Germany and Switzerland, I know from first hand experience new e-bikes sold that can go up to 45 km/h are licensed and when possible riders must take the lane and get off the bike path.

I wasn’t referring to engined vehicles at all. You seem to be missing the reason I didn’t use the word engine. The law is clear on those and covers people riding even small powered versions such as mini moto’s etc

The law on electric based vehicles needs to catch up hence choosing my words to say Motor . A electric car , mobility scooter , electric moped or ebike which exceed 15mph should be governed properly.

Not true
Cars have engines or motors or both or probably none/turbines/rockets/...
EV's have been around forever in the 4 wheeled car world, they are not a new invention. Before Mr Ford buggered things up, EV's where more popular than fossil fuel engines. Steam was more popular than both I think.

Car, just comes from cart if I remember correctly (or carriage?)

But d8mik has already won as you say.

mobility scooters are limited to 4mph on pavements, 8mph on the road.

The law is clear, they all become motor vehicles (be it a car or bike) or illegal.
The only one not, though not mentioned, is electric scooters as they can't seem to decide and have the dodgy trial renting things.

Clear as in if anyone bothers to read it.
The Government don't seem to give a toss as they don't advertise anything about laws, refresh knowledge or changes w.r.t. current trends.

I’m aware that’s the rule. But it’s not enforced as I see many , many doing substantially more than 8mph without being road registered.

Think about it like this …….. if you were riding a 50cc mini Moto around your local Tesco car park at night with your mates you would quickly be visited by the old bill , and summons for no ins, no rfl etc

If you called the police and said there’s a group on de-restricted e bikes doing the same they couldn’t care less as the legislation isn’t tough enough yet to guarantee conviction and it’s still not seen as a “crime”

What a sweeping generalization ( pensioners can't handle a 15 mph E- bike) I presume you think they can't drive /walk/swim etc properly as well.
Would you have felt better had I added "many" in front of pensioners? In the statistics here they make up the largest percentage of ebike crashes, and they're also one of the demographics that buys the most ebikes. I didn't mean to generalise, of course it isn't literally every one of them.. but the truth of the matter is that people who have physical impairment that makes them struggle on an ordinary push bike are sometimes encouraged to get an ebike, and while it is great that they get to enjoy riding again, the speeds that very easily can be achieved on one is cause for concern as folks get older and struggle with mobility, vision, hearing etc.
