DH in those days wasn't as specialised as it is now- you did DH, XC and trials over the weekend on the same bike. Sure the courses weren't as rough but they were damn steep on a rigid bike with a silly long stem.
 
they must've known their limits beforehand and at least practised different methods on tackling rough terrain.. I'd give it a go ;)
 
I guess "oldskool" depends on how old you are.

Those bikes seem to have working brakes.

When I was a kid, we had to walk five miles to the old skool, through the snow, uphill both ways. Shoes? We didn't even have FEET!
