Thanks for posting the pictures. I can see that it is using Mavic rims. Can you please confirm the size and model of the rims? Also how many gears does the SA hub have?

The 531st decal dates this bike to the 1980s. Though the Mavic Module 3 rims were made from 1975 their stickers are of a latter date than this. I would speculate that the bike was made for on-road light touring . A heavy-duty tourer would have used stronger rims or been laced with more spokes.
An ATB of the 80s would have most likely used ATB specific tubing but unlikely to use a SA 5 speed hub or 700c wheels. whilst I don't think this was an ATB, it could have been used as a roughstuff bike.
Its other components are standard quality road ones but not top-notch.
1980s touring bikes is not my area of expertise. However, I would describe this bike as a basic tourer of the period with a hand-built frame made by a well regarded frame builder who wrote books on frame-building. It's only historical importance being that it was built by the same man who built the first British Made US style mountain Bike in 1981.

That's more of a hybrid/tourer than an ATB me thinks.
