Old Raleigh

Evening all,

I'm in the process of converting an old Raleigh into a fixie for commuting. After having some Qs answered on here it would appear that my frame was a nothing special "gas pipe" machine, with numerous oddities: chain stay bridge and bolt hole for kickstand; weird brake stay bridge; holes in brake stay for dynamo cables; holes in top tube for clips for brake cables and so on

So, I went to my Argos in Bristol and got them to remove the old fittings, fill the holes, get the tracking 100% and add braze ons for a rack and bottle cage and re paint it. Here's the finished results with the wheels that I built (BLB 36h hubs, DT double butted spikes, Mavic Open Pro rims).

I'm very pleased with the results . I still need to get some bars, cranks and a seatpost, as I've already got the rest. Am looking forward to giving it a spin.

Thanks for the kind responses. I managed a couple of hours work yesterday. Still have to get a shorter stem and put the bar tape on. And get a lockring. Here's some photos of it almost done:

Bars are old Raleigh. Brakes Tektro: RL340 levers and R559 dual pivots - needed the long reach as the frame was for 27" wheels and im using 700c. Seat is an old, but in excellent condition brown Brooks Professional. The crank is an Andel RSC7, 165mm, 46t. With a Shimano U26, 110mm, it gives a chain line of 43mm, which matches the rear perfectly. Chain is a Gusset Slink. Top tube clips are old school Dura Ace. Bolts are too long and BZP- couldnt get any M3 A2 15mm ones.

Anyhow, took it for a quick test spin- wow, it was great , but fixed will take some getting used to.

One final thing Id like is a Raleigh head tube badge, so will keep my eyes open

Super result, but what is this fixed fad all about? Add some gears to make it ride as good as it looks.

Gears!?!!!! I have a Cannondale R800, which whilst fine is bearing the brunt of the daily commute (85m a week), and it's gears are no exception :cry: So I want a winter commuter as hassle free as possible. Also, several mates rave about fixies, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Anyhow, does anyone know where I can get a Raleigh headtube badge?

How exactly does it teach you to be a better rider? Makes you see mad van drivers sooner?
