Hey Fluffy Chicken,
not sure if you'll see this cause it's been a while, but I feel like an old pro now after months of researching different shock options... here's what I've done:
I bought a mint condition 1998 z2 Bam which has the bolt on steerer and I swapped the 1 1/8" out for an original Marzocchi 1" in steerer. That is going on my large 17" Bontrager.
I am hoping to buy a NOS Rock Shox Mag 21 and bolt the crown/steerer from my original rigid Bonty Race fork onto the Mag 21 forks - the legs/stanchions on both measure 1" (25.4mm) in diameter so I hope this works bc the axle to length should come out to about 400-405mm and be a good match for my medium 15" Bontrager.
I am leaving the Judy on the Klein as it is the 98 and is in near mint condition and honestly feels really nice - though I have yet to try the Marz... that will be a fun comparison. I will post comparison once I've got everything installed.
One last question - are you saying that even though most of the Marzocchi's do not have bolt on steers that most (or a lot) have bolt on crowns that can be swapped with the z2 Bam crown (w bolt on steerer)? Cause this would mean that I can theoretically do with the Marz what I'm hoping to do with the Bonty Race and Mag 21. For example, the BAM is pretty heavy (4+ lbs I believe), so I could swap the crown and steerer to a lighter Marz shock (if all the weight is not saved in an aluminum steerer as you mentioned) and I would have a lighter shock on my Bonty. Sound feasible? (Example: according to weight weenies the 98 Z2 BAM is 1790gms w steerer and the 2000 Z2 XFly is 1595 grms so if that weight savings is not in the crown/steerer and the crowns can swapped, that's a savings of .44 lbs, which is pretty significant!)
Thoughts?
Thanks! John
