1970s Marnati sold from steelvintage.com
For the record in case it is removed and we lose information about this bicycle.

Do you remember the epic 1952 Tour de France picture of Coppi and Bartali passing a water bottle? If you look closer you also see a man popping out from a convertible team car behind them. That is exactly Umberto Marnati, mechanic of Fausto Coppi in the 1950s, later frame builder at Legnano and Bianchi Reparto Corse.

Having learnt lacing wheels and welding at a very young age, Umberto Marnati decided to start manufacturing bicycles under his name. And eventually he opened his own atelier in Milan, later run by his son Daniele from the 1970s on, a city with a tradition of excellent frame builders.
And Mr. Marnati was no exception. Via Delfico no. 26 soon became a meeting point of enthusiasts who were keen to ride artisan racing frames which were largely renowned for unique attention to details.

On the technical side, this Marnati Record is equipped with a full shifting which would be good enough for a full-grown racing bike, let alone a sports bike.

This is rather lovely.
1940s Wilier Triestina Super Sport Road Bike sold from steelvintage.com
For the record in case it is removed and we lose information about this bicycle.

One of the oldest and most prestigious Italian bicycle brands still existing, Wilier Triestina, was founded in 1906 in Bassano del Grappa, northern Italy.
Its name is a patriotic statement, referring to the claim W l’Italia LIbera E Redenta. (Meaning: Long live Italy, free and redeemed).

Over the years the former called 'tipo la triestina' became the epitome of Wilier bikes, but this success also left the other excellent bikes which Wilier produced behind in the shadows. And exceptional bikes they were, just like our Wilier Triestina Super Sport Road Bike from the 1940s.

The lugged frame is held in a soft bronze shade with a nice patina covering the paint and the original decals.
Closer looks reveal that this Wilier is really great sportsbike. The frame offers an internal cable routing, which not only includes the rear braking cable but also the shifting cable. Other fine technical solutions include aluminium hubs, a face-plate stem and an early version of Simplex' Tour de France shifting!
Most of the parts are actually Wilier's own, from the hubs to the saddle, it is nice to have such a complete ensemble.

This rare Wilier road bike is certainly a great piece for a cycling collection. Classy and the high tech of its day.

A very nice bicycle, not heard of this one.
1980s Kotter racing team randonneur sold from steelvintage.com
For the record in case it is removed and we lose information about this bicycle.

In 1979 former opera singer, restaurateur and cycling enthusiast Konrad Kotter started to sponsor his own cycling team. The German Kotter's Cycling Team. Among the riders were some pretty talented sportsmen like Dietrich 'Didi' Thurau or Hans Peter Jakst.

The Kotter bikes were basically upgraded bikes of the German brand Kondor. The frames of which were made by Romani in Parma, Italy.

Subsequently those bikes became pretty popular among cyclists in Germany who were able to acquire beautiful pure racing bikes and even fast touring bikes like this Kotter racing Team randonneur.

The frame of this well designed randonneur is formed by Oria GM0.0 CroMo tubing.
Oria became a popular supplier for frame builders in the second half of the 1980s and the 1990s. The last steel bike which won the Tour de France was actually built by Dario Pegoretti using Oria!
The GM.0.0 is a set which consists of double butted and straight gauge tubes and which weightwise is comparable with Columbus SLX frames. It shows a special ridged profile which can also be found on other Oria groupsets.

A top class frame like our Kotter needs an adequate groupset, in our case it is a great setup of Shimano shifting and hubs, Dia Compe brakes, and Nitto handlebar and front rack.

This bike is made to eat miles like they were potato chips. It is an unstoppable machine which takes you onto long rides as safely as it supports you daily commuting routine.

1982 Kettler Strato sold from steelvintage.com
For the record in case it is removed and we lose information about this bicycle.

In the 1970s and 1980s the German Company Kettler became famous for two moving products. One was a pedal-powered children buggy, the Kettcar. The other one was a series of bicycles with Aluminium frames, the Kettler Alu Rad.The top models were the aerodynamic Kettler Strato.

One of these Kettler Strato bikes is was we are looking at right now. And this example seems to come straight out of a time machine from the year 1980. It has rarely been used.
The frame consists of butted aluminium tubes wich are bonded by massive aluminium lugs. To achieve a greater aerodynamic effect, the tubes have been formed into a teardrop shape. Together with the special groupset, this bike reduced draft by 20% compared to a bike with regular tubes and parts. The groupset we are talking about, a Shimano 600 AX, was developed as one of the early attempts to shape bikes in order to save watts. It features the famous Dyna-Drive Pedals which create a slightly different and lower position without reducing cornering clearance. Thus this 59cm frame is comparable to a normal 60cm frame.
Together the frame and groupset form a comfortable yet fast racer. Rather rare.

A nice piece for friends of the somehow special, technical early 1980s design, and also a nice piece of German cycling history.
