I'm knackered, below average and have a dodgy reputation...hope someone looks after me when I'm older.

I'll just cover you in MBUK stickers, that's what we did to WDS bikes back then.

Dawes ATBs are not historic or rare, Claude butler ATBs are not rare or historic, Peugeot ATBs are not rare or historic, Saracen ATBs are not rare or historic, Raleigh ATBs are not rare or historic. Let's search out the rare or historic, find bikes with a backstory, with a past and give those bikes a future.

A sweeping and generally arrogant statement, having been a child of the 80's and having cut my teeth on a Raleigh Marverick (the later Yellow and White GT, with the bteer frame), these bikes have a big part to play in UK MTB history.
Sure they all had their BSO's of the day and I agree the Raleigh Mustang and Peugeot Ranger were, but the Raleigh lightweights and bikes like the Peugeot Scorpion and the Team with hand made Reynolds frames with trick internal welding were lovely bikes that we aspired to. These bikes were viable where as Kleins, Ritcheys and Funks were exotica that were rare, massively expensive and couldn't be brought locally.
I admire every highend Raleigh, Saracen, Peugeot and Claud Butler that is put on here as they were the 'real' bikes of the day and much like a Porsche vs Ferrari often doing things better and more reliably.

Carl.

Did you notice that I purposefully used the term ATB, not MTB? ATB were generally considered the BSOs of the 80s in the UK. So that wasn't a very 'sweeping statement' but was in fact very focused and pointed at particular types of bikes- ie low end, low rent bikes often found with central ridge tyres, focused on those that wanted to follow the fashion rather than the sport.

If you'd bothered to read the thread and it's context you would have realised that i was not referring to hand made 531 raleighs or peugeot team bikes but solely to the shite bikes like raleigh mustangs, mavericks and magnums. Just because you and I may have ridden them as kids doesn't make them historic or rare and does not mean that we should have to fawn over them on this site.

H,mmm, interesting the Classic car comparison...strangely many of the sort after cars were/are actually rubbish...though expensive in the day...and indeed today....

Yet, some cheap massed produced models, have become enduring cult Icons.......

Agreed, many of the bikes mention were rubbish....but to some, they were the stuff of dreams...all they coulkd afford...a stepping stone to better things, a gateway to great adventures.

I always wanted a Dawes Galaxy when i was at school...my mates had Fox's..I made do with a Hawk from woolies...didn't stop me going where they went...my first MTB ( of sorts ) was a homemade affair...heavy, 3spd..illfitting stem jammed with cokecan..Cowhorns..etc....it did me proud.

My rides now are more exotic...better...in truth yes...( from memory) though I am not, though I do have more money ( did )

but that doesn't IMO entitle me to pour scorn on any bike others choose...

Its the diversity in us all,and the products available that makes it possible to produce those rare beast you covert so.

K

but no-one is making you fawn over them pete, some might wax lyrical and as far as I'm concerned that fair enough- whatever floats your boat. no-one that I have seen, has had a go at folk fawning over the high end bikes. Bikes that few could afford BITD and most still can't now- if you don't like it say nowt, if you do, knock yoursell owt.

like your avatar BTW

But dreams cost nothing. Why dream of and aspire to something rubbish. It's a dream- it could be a gold plated Cunningham which you wheelie the full length of the pitch at Wembley whilst playing the fancy bit in 'All along the watchtower' on Hendix's battered strat whilst dressed as Elvis circa 1970 before heading in the winning goal in the world cup final.

It's like Baldrick when asked by Blackadder what he would have if he could have anything. He replied 'A turnip of my very own'

My point..exactly.

Not everyone would know of cunningham...nor for that matter Jimi Hendrix...but a walk past the LBS with its shiny INSERT BRAND MODEL..something to save for...something to lust after...

We don't all aspire to the same things...else wembley pitch would be very crowded.

First mtb/atb I ever saw was a Mustang that one of the lads in the village got. All the kids were desperate for a go and we all wanted to trade in our tatty bmx's for one of these super bikes with gears and everything. Can still remember being amazed at how easy it was to get up the steep hill in the park in lowest gear. I was 10 and did not understand the difference between a good mtb/atb and a bad one. After this I lusted after an Apollo Blizzard because I liked the colour. There will have been far better bikes in the shop but the colour was more important to a 10 year old then the groupset. Never got either but seeing a Mustang or Blizzard always raises a smile because of my memories. If the lad who owned the Mustang found this site would it be such a bad thing for him to want another? I don't want a bike of this standard but can understand why people do.

Since I got sucked into this site I've had many retro bikes but my favourite is the Clockwork that is as close to the one I wanted bitd as possible. I want to own some more high end gear (inc Fat's, Pace, Manitou) and probably will but doubt any of them will knock my favourite off it's lofty position.

Each to their own I guess.

Bang on Keith. ;)

the only time I want to be on wembley turf is with 1000's of other folk, breaking the goalposts- happy days
