Surly it's the X517 that is the predecessor to the X717. Not the X317 which as far as I know switched to the XM range as the XM317.

You are comparing the wrong rims...

Mavic later renamed their products according to a new naming standard:
X517 became XC717 (non-disc)
X317 became XC717 DISC
Note:
The X317 is a SUP *welded* rim (same as XC717).
The XM317 is a completely different rim that has a *pinned* join and is a cheaper, budget version.

Sorry but aren't you supposed to state when promoting your own ebay adverts?

Also, advertising as Mavic xc717 with retro x317 labels is a bit confusing, unless they genuinely are Mavic xc717 rims with some old labels fitted?

While that is true and not true, MAvic tech docs for 04/05 year when the name change happened show the X 717 DISC (X 317 Disc) as the Cross country top rim X 317 Disc think implied as the old name.

Though in the Cross Mountain XM range the X 317 DISC lives but with an OEM Specific Rim statement

The catalogue don't really mention the name changes actually involved bar a few
X221, X223 Disc and X225 become: XM 317, XM 317 Disc and XM 517 respectively
and also mean X317 DISC was only out for a year if it did switch range level to a 717 DISC

however it does state the 'XC 717' was a new introduction


So at this point I'll leave it to people who were biking at this time and took an interest.

A: Yes they are. I have had several sets of both designations and the *only* difference is the sticky label.
Please read my clarifications above:

The key to understanding this confusion is that you cannot compare these rims to the XM317. The 'XM' models are a completely different range. Once you get to grips with that, and understand that the X317-DISC is a completely different rim, you will then be able to see through the fog and understand the reality of what I have said from the beginning, which is that this is the former designation of what we currently know as the XC717-DISC.
Respectfully, I'm not giving any more time to this pleasant discussion. Feel free to have further debates among yourselves. I stand by what I have written here.
