I believe it's a requirement from British Cycling (whom we are affiliated with) for any ride organised through Retrobike.
 
Its a real pain in the arse having to stop every 15 yards to call the Air Ambulance, and a lot of people don't like seeing copious amounts of other people's blood and brains whilst they are out trying to have a lovely bike ride.

Plus its selfish.
