Nexus 8. Talk to me.

I've got a Nexus 7 on my pub bike. Bodged onto vertical drops with the wrong non-turn washers, and it works pretty well

they don't feel massively smooth when you turn them by hand

These are the only no-turns I have.
Was going to assemble and begrudgingly buy a £10 small parts kit from the bay which includes a choice of washers if I really have to.

That's what I did. I ended up running the nds no-turn on the drive side to get closer to where I wanted to be (you actually only need one side)

It's better to use both sides, as the torque loads are shared between both ends of the axle - surely you'll always have both washers available anyway, even if you swap them L/R.

they're not symmetrical.

Actually they are, they're just handed - the LH and RH one of each pair are symmetrical, so that if you swap them so that the driveside one is on the non-driveside side then the other one of the pair will fit the opposite side.

This is my predicament;

Perfect if I had chainstay routing but I don't and reluctant to go full length outer with cable ties

Workable cable routing-wise but chain fouls.
Will try a bit of bending I reckon.

the first photo is "correct", nexus equipped bikes always have chainstay routing in my experience

I have a yellow one I can send you if you think it'll be useful
