Newbie, possibly returning roadie with a Peugeot ID question (don't we all?)

Ren Rawbor

Fat Chance Fan
Hi all, just joined in hopes of finding some further clarification in identifying the frame of the bitsa I just picked up for £30 from auction. The frame number is B3024234 which from research suggests a 1983 model, tubing badged as Vitus 181 & fully chromed fork which (again, from quick research) suggest it was likely somewhere around a PFN10 or similar.

I'll post pics when I get some, but assuming this is a PFN10 frame/fork what are their rarity/value like in original shape?

Just wondering whether it'd be worth collecting together some more original parts and renovating it or simply leave it as it is, a tatty fixie with paint I'd describe as "average" bearing in mind it's coming up on 40 years old, obviously seen some outdoor storage but not salted roads IMO. Components are c. 1985 Weinmann 500 brakeset, unbranded deep-rim 24 spoke wheels on Quando hubs, unbranded ally pursuit bars on original looking stem, worn out Cinelli Unicanitor on original looking alloy seatpost & "Retrospec" branded chainset. Never heard of them, but it looks like a semi-ok budget setup & would assume the wheelset is of the same origin going by the colourscheme carried through on the rims.

Personally, I like the simplicity of it as it stands & tempted to just service it and get it riding nicely but at the same time it seems a waste of a nice frame to not find some period correct bits to hang off it. Pics to come when I get a moment. Cheers.

Hi @ekjdm14 sounds like you're in a similar position to me.. returning roadie..and for some reason starting a peugeot rennovation... as far as models go have you seen this,? Bikeboom project peugeot brochures

Lots of scans of old brochures.. helped me Id my project mostly...

Brakes could be orig. But many of that era had clb brakes. Wheelset def not. I bought a new claud butler about 9 years ago to get me going again, and that had quando hubs. They've been ok. But defo. Recent

Original gearset would likely have been simplex. Maillard hubs (heliomatic cassette....don't go there...)...

From other threads on here I've gathered ghat peugeot frame numbers aren't that reliable...but I'm no expert....

Good luck ...and post pics...it would be great to see what you've taken on....

I'll show you mine....pic 1 is where we started pic 2 &3 is how it's going...

Yes all OK thankfully, although he's got to go and get an echo done apparently & still waiting on the appointment on that. We've all ended up coming down with a rancid head cold now (not the 'rona! lol) but on the mend from that & it's keep on keeping on... Also the photos I took of the bike as it arrived have vanished somehow so will have to get some more when it's light (not a lot has changed, ruined bar tape removed/flat pedals installed & front wheel I squeezed a big 40c touring tyre in there for test-riding as the white Kendas fitted don't look the best for cold weather handling or comfort.)

Apologies for the late reply, barely had a moment to get online (I started typing this last night, just managed to finish off now!)

Stay well all.
