You can get full sets of Jagwire inner and outer gear AND brake on eBay for under a tenner, lots of nice colours too
I've bought a few of these, everything except gear inners for £4.24, not a quick delivery as they come from China http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171186855778? ... 1436.l2648

The same sets are available for a few quid more from UK sellers if you want them to come quicker.

Where's the cheapest place to buy outer cables?

If the bike is 20+ years old, I'd replace all the cables, gear and brake, inners and outers. I'd avoid the really cheap, galvanised cables, I think they're a false economy. I've used Transfil inners and outers, they're fairly cheap and work fine, wipe a smear of grease along the inners before you thread them through the outers and they'll work well for ages: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/transfil/

A decent set of proper cable cutters makes the job a lot easier: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KAMASA-NEW-RE ... 1426029446

Re:

Good shout - ParkTool's website is a goldmine of info, and usually quite simple to follow.

Those cutters look just like my Pedros for half the cost; I suppose that doesn't tell you anything about the quality of the steel, but I wouldn't be surprised...

Re:

Having a read over this, directed from your wheel thread, you rushed into this in eager to get it going.

Its cost you though heading off buying things your not entirely sure about.

The first buy, chain, shifters etc could have been better and cheaper probably. For a start there is probably nothing wrong with the shifters, just need a clean and lube. And the can't is would be fine just needing some new brake blocks.

Forget Amazon, learn eBay, and mainly Chain reaction cycles, wiggle, on-one and merlin. Also you seem to have a Halfords nearby so use their online store to click and collect. It is much cheaper.
There are a few other places but they are the main online stores probably.
As about what to buy and buy when you find what you need. A bike tool kit for 20 or 30 quid would have all the tools you need and Ben cheaper.

It does not look like you have changed the bottom bracket to the o e that came with Sheds chainset. Aka I've heard no mention of a new tool or the bugger it is to get out.
The current bottom bracket is too long and might have shifting problems at the front.

The crank extractor needed the flat bit at the end taking out. You probably stripped the crank threads trying to use it with the flat bit on. It'll not have been pushing against the bottom bracket but the chain set itself.

We've all done these things and learnt though.

Keep at it though.

Re:

Cables, Clark's pre-lube are cheap on CRC at the moment £5 a set for each and nice Teflon coated Clark's are cheap on click and collect at halfords for a bit more.

I use a dremel to cut the outercasing to size.

Any of the retrobiekrs near you to pop round and help as you go along?

Re:

Full sets of Jagwire cables (inner & outer, brake & gear) in lots of colours are currently just over a fiver posted on eBay. If you're careful you'll likely even get a second bike out of the leftover outers

How's this coming on now? Interested to see how you're getting on :)

Re:

It's not done but i'm riding it fine.

I didnt put the front derailur on in the end after about 3 hours trying to adjust it proepr.y i gave up. I think the BB is incompatible with the chainset.

I didn't put the rear brakes on because the wheels are out of true so it keeps rubbing.
I cba spending more money on this bike at the moment.
