Good advice, the grease in these old shifters goes quite stiff with age so a good soaking with something like WD40 will probably get them working again. I wouldn't recommend trying to take them apart beyond removing the covers, unless you're very confident with fiddly, springy bits. If you haven't ordered those shifters on Amazon I'd have a go at this first, half the fun of fixing old bikes is getting the old stuff working again IMO.

Oh and the cheap chains are £4 from Asda, Tesco did sell them but recently sold them off cheap and I bought them...........all of them! viewtopic.php?f=16&t=260105 :xmas-wink:

They are knackered.. the left one is physically broke i think. Somthing has snapped off inside also on the right one the shifter nob id nearly falling out of the casing.

Someone please tell me i've got right tool and it just needs some (more) elbow grease.

I'm not entirely sure but i think im using the tool correctly. Screw the outer into the threads then turn the wrench so the middle big is pushing in.
The small hole also has threads but the hole is smaller than the end of the crank puller tool.. is there something wrong here?

It sounds like you are doing it correctly.
wind the outer bit down so the inner bit is hidden. Then screw the outer bit into the thread (on the crank) normally covered by a dust cap. Once this is tight, you can start winding the inner bit out. The outer bit grips the crank, the inner bit pushes against the end of the bottom bracket spindle. Sometimes you get a bit of cold welding which makes it a bit stubborn at first. But should soon part company. If it doesn't then you need to remove the crank puller, get some penetrating lube in, leave it for a bit, then retry. In some circumstances it is possible to strip the thread from the crank. Which makes the whole task that much harder. (Pretty unusual for this to happen mind, though it *can*)

I manage to get the crankset by using two hammers to batter the crap out of the two wrenches lol.

DISASTER! The bikes previous owner(s) have messed up the threads in the left pedal!! I can't get the tool to stay in there. I've tried battering it with a hammer and chisel but it won't work :cry:

If you've decided that you're going to scrap these cranks then it won't hurt to run a hacksaw down it like in the photo I've just googled below. Watch you don't catch the frame and bear in mind that your crank is steel so it'll be fairly tough. It may help to open the cut up by knocking a chisel in.

If the bike has a sealed bottom bracket (I doubt that it has if it's still original) then you can get a stuck left arm off by putting an open ended spanner behind the offending crank and undoing the bottom bracket on the drive side.

Ahh....welcome to the world of retrobikes.

I started "lightly restoring" a GT Tequesta that I bought for £35 and got a bit carried away.....and I daren't add up the cost of the bits that I've bought for it.

But the point is - once it's done, everything will work on it, as it was intended.....which is great!

Looks like a great project.....

That looks a nice idea i'll try it tomorrow if wacking it with a hammer a few more times doesn't work. I'm worried about damaging the frame microscopically It REALLY REALLY doesn't sound healthy when i wack it.

Btw i've spent £110 on this bike now

Probably gonna have to spend more now buying a hacksaw

I tried the hacksaw methof for about 20 seconds and thought "fcuk this"..

I got hte blow tourch out and heated it up for a few minutes and a simple tap with a hammer and it came flying off. Amazing
I'd been hacking at it for ages today and last night. Amazing what a bit of heat can do.

I've got the crank that shed said me on to it now and it's starting to look like a bike again.

I've cut myself 3 times and i've got a tiny metal splinter stuck in my finer.. oh and i burnt myself :| :facepalm:


The headset/forks are rattling and are kinda loose.. gonna watch a few youtube vids on how to fix that.

Might have missed some of the thread, but when you used the crank remover, did you take the little cap off the end first. That's for splined BBs

Didn't remove anything.. i used it as it came..

I had to use two hammers with it though
