Newbie Marin Bike Help

Following on from my previous thread i decided to make a dedicated thread for my newly acquired bike. (£30) (1991 bolinas ridge???)
First time i've tried to fix up a bike since i was a teen.. I'm fairly technically minded and when i get stuck, no doubt Google and YouTube will be invaluable.

I'm basically looking for some suggestions/tips and some answers to my questions from you experts.

Clean wheels + cassette + new tyres and tubes.
clean up derailleurs - there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them that a good clean and wd40 wouldn't sort out
remove chain, clean and reoil it.
take off brake calipers clean them up, re grease them and pit them back on with new brake pads
fit new cables, wd40 the shifters, tighten them up on the bars and hope for the best that youtube videos will tach me how to calibrate the gears
The bottom bracket seems good and smooth i wont bother with that for now.

Anything else?

Most of the yellow stuff you can see isn't rust. it's some kind of paint that wipes off easily. There's a bit of rust on the bike but im not worried.

Worst case scenario,, and something is broke or too nasty to even refurb, would it be a huge issue to hunt down the original chainset parts for this bike? I don't even know where to look. Would modern equivalents be compatible?

I might just do what i can and pay the cycle shop to do the rest

First thing is throw away that chainset! Its solid steel and weighs an appreciable amount of the bike. Plenty around to replace it and modern compact road rings fit the 'old' MTB chainsets. Check in the FS section for suitable bits. Modern will be a waste of money as there are plenty of suitable old parts around.

Re chain. Just coz it looks ok, dont mean it is not worn. You need chain wear gauge to know for sure.

Check chain for stiff links amd the joininng pin is sound, they can fail.

Remove tyres and check from inside for thorns, nails etc..
Check tubes for cracks and badly stuck on patches.

Check rims for wear, check wheel trueness and spoke tension.


Ok, ignore for now what i said about tyres and tubes since you have ordered new ones.

First impressions - my that looks rusty. But clearly quite a lot isn't, as it is as you point out paint or something.
Agree with earlier comment, if you can swap out the chainset you'll halve the weight of the bike and it will be a lot easier to go up hill/lift over stiles etc.
Seatpost - in first pic, looks like a lot of seatpost showing. Just check there is still plenty in the frame.

Only two tips.
Throw away the WD40. It is the work of the devil. It is not a lubricant and should be kept away from bikes.
And buy stainless cables not galvanised.

Also, Wilko/Wilkinsons sell brake blocks and cables DIRT CHEAP.

Already ordered the galvanised cables and the blocks..
I bought some halfords cycle oil and 3in1 spray today.. so no need for wd40.

How do i go about figuring out what chainset is compatible with mine?
I'm not entirely dumb.. i did a forum search trying to find someone with the same bike as mine who did the same thing but to no avail.
