Retro Newbie
Hello, I am a newbie here, I don't really consider myself a retro biker as such but I got into MTB in the late 90's and have an affection for 8 speed XTRM950-3 gear (which adorns all my bikes plus plenty of spares in the garage!) and it is great to see the enthusiasm for kit from the era I was first into MTB.

I have a GT Lightning that I bought new in 1997 and used as a second then third bike, and for road rides and (rarely!) turbotraining. It is just too good for the tiny amount of use it gets and I am going to sell it - I am a full suss convert and just need a basic hardtail for the very muddiest of my rides, and road/turbotraining use. I don't want a hardtail I pamper so much I don't want to take it into the gloop!

I am wondering how to sell it. I am experienced in buying XTRM950-3 gear and Pace stuff on Ebay so know what they are worth, but many of the finishing parts will not be worth the hassle of selling them and I have had little luck selling sets of V-brake wheels before - even good ones. It seems a shame to split up a bike in good working order with new cables etc on it. Do you retro bike fans buy this sort of thing or is it just not retro enough in which case it will be a halfway house?

Rough spec is as follows: 16" GT Lightning (so 18" by anyone else's measuring standards), complete XTRM950-3 drivetrain (mostly 951) - 8x28 - with dual control levers. Cassette is XT not XTR. BB M952 sealed and nearly new, rapid ruse mech, nearly new Chris King headset and XTR cables all round, Pace RC39 fork (barely used - one of the latest ones) with XTRM960 V-brakes. Wheels are XTRM951 on 517 Citrons with DT Revolution spokes.

I could accept that I would get a bit less for the bike whole than in parts, but not if the difference is massive. So I suppose I am wondering if the RC39 forks and M960 V-brakes present a big issue for the retro crowd?

Anyway, some pics will follow - in the state it is in the garage now - not prepared in any way for sale - I gather you people like pics :D

I think you'll find it easier to sell off in bits, to sell complete you'd have to price it as an absolute bargain and get no where near what you'd like for it.

splitting will get more money generally.

No offers to purchase on here please, as all items must have a price and it should be in the for sale section if that's the route the owner goes down.

Indeed - I will do proper threads in the for sale section when I come to sell - which will be when I have found the time to split it, if that is the way it goes.

I continue to use 8 speed XTR but I do have too many spares, especially of things like the dual control levers that I will not need when this bike is gone.
There is also a second set of wheels and a spare front for this bike which are on barely used Hope Ti hubs which again are no use now as they won't take discs... Hopefully the people on here might appreciate them also as Ebay is likely to see a low price. So there will be quite a blow out!

Probably for the best if it's unused.
I'd keep a watch on the for sale section to get an idea of format and prices etc when the time comes, you could keep an eye on the post 98 section as you might can trade some of it for stuff you want.
Good luck with it

Ok.. so whats the difference between the Xizang and Lightning frames ??

A lot of money and several places on the periodic table.

The Lightning is aluminium and the Zizang is titanium.
