Well, I've spent a few hours going over the bike with some degreaser and a toothbrush, and it's looking much better. I haven't taken anything off to clean it yet, but we're moving in the right direction at least

I can read what's on the cranks and chainset now they're a bit cleaner

They say Shimano FC-MC32 170
And Shimano IG K32 & IG K22

The front derailleur is also a FD-MC32

And the front brake is a BR-M739

The rear cassette says Interactive Glide 3, and from what I can see it's an 11-28


The teeth look ok on the cassette, but are knackered on the chainrings

Should I try to source and original spec chainset (a Sugino Impel 500) or should I fit something like a Deore XT?

I think I'm going to go almost completely standard spec, but with V brakes front and rear

Will the OEM Ritchey Logic levers work with the V-brakes? Or should I get some XT levers?

Also, I'm undecided on rear derailleur and cassette.
The bike is and was originally 7 speed, but it shifts absolutely horribly right now. It's slow to shift, and sometimes doesn't shift at all.

Also, the front shifter is indexed so that it clicks way more times that I would have expected. It's a 3 speed front shifter, but it clicks 7 times when operated through its full motion......I would have expected it to click once per cog? Is something wrong with it?


The shifters are gripshift SRT400, but I've heard they should be either SRT600 or SRT800

If I switch the shifters, should I go for 7 or 8 speed?

Finally, I'm wondering what length stem I'll need, and what Project 2 forks I'll need. I'm 6ft tall with a 34" inseam, and the bike is a 19"

how many cogs on the back wheel.. and are you keeping it? will help you choose gearing.

It's got a seven speed 11-28 on it at the minute.

The 11 and 13 gears both have two shark-fin shaped teeth on them. All other teeth look in good order

I don't know whether to stick with seven speed, or move to eight

I've heard the smaller jump between ratios is quite nice, and that seven speed parts are increasingly hard to come by?

I'll be using the bike for commuting and light riding at the weekend. My commute has a couple of hills to navigate


EDIT: Just found out the bike originally came with eight gears, so that's what we're going for

Your bike was the first one I saw when searching on here.....it's absolutely stunning mate

Your bike is the reason I've decided to stick to the original colour

Yours and Darren's (Feetabix) are the ones that have inspired me to do give the bike the rebuild it deserves

Can you give me any pointers regarding which model/serial number items I should be trying to find?

ie: are the derailleurs 735's? Or 739's?

I'm sure they're neither of those, but you know what I mean

Where abouts are you based? It'd be good to see your bike at some point in the future

Thought I should post this picture for everyone....

I was out on the bike earlier just playing around with the shifters when I saw a car that caught my eye

I know people have said that Rover have done a turquoise colour that closely resembles the '95 Cinder Cone, but this one looked identical .......





Unfortunately I didn't think to get the number plate or VIN number to check the paint code, but I'll go back again tomorrow to see if it's still there
