Newbie - 1995 Kona Cinder Cone - Refurb

Devout Dirtbag
Hi guys,

Newbie here. I just signed up a few days ago, and I thought I should say Hi and introduce myself and my bike to everyone.

A few weeks ago somebody threw a bike in my skip/bin at work. The bike was covered in that much dirt and sh*t that it had started to go mouldy and was growing fluff!!

Despite not being a rider, and knowing nothing about bikes, I thought it looked too interesting to just throw away.

So, I saved the bike from the skip and I've decided I'm going to try and refurbish it.

I've given it a quick wash-down to get all the filth off it, but there's obviously a long way to go yet.

The plan is to carry out a light refresh of the bike and use it for commuting and gentle riding at the weekend.

If I get bitten by the bug, I'll do a proper rebuild of the bike to the standard it deserves.

I'm completely new to this type of thing, so I'm going to need a lot of help, and will ask a lot of daft questions.

I've written out a spec sheet, and have taken some photos for everybody.

Here goes nothing.........

New fork, headset, bars, brakes & levers as far as I can see.

I'm not sure the gripshifts are original, I thought it came with thumbies.

Sadly it's the one with the STUPID incompatible STX chainset with 95pcd all-in one chainrings that Shimano did for only 1994, so you'll need a new chainset as it's missing the outer ring.

Re:

Thanks for all the replies so far

I've got a good idea of what's been replaced. The thing I don't know is, did they upgrade much, or have they done things 'on the cheap' when items have worn out?

I think I'll keep the brakes that are on there at the minute as they seem like a nice upgrade

I'm not sure if the fork is the original one. The frame has a 'Mountain Shock' sticker so I know it had a shock as standard, but don't know if it was this one or maybe a Rock Shock?.......if it is this one I think it needs servicing

I don't know whether to keep the shock or switch to a P2. If I go for a P2 what do I need to look for? Length, thread, etc.....

I want to swap the bars and stem, but don't know what size stem I'll need, so may use it for a little while as-is to see how it feels. The stem that's on it now is 135mm. I think they came with 110/120 originally?

Gripshifts are standard on '95s, but this has SRT400s and the original spec sheet says SRT800s, so there may have been a swap at some point

I have no idea about gears, cassettes, cranks, etc, just yet. I'm still learning about those, so I don't know what to replace them with

I think the wheels and hubs are original too

I think the first thing to do is get it serviced and working properly, and then start replacing things

What does everyone reckon?

if you look at the spec you provided for the OEM spec bike you'll see the bike was available with XC51 forks.... these are marzocchi so the forks fitted to yours are not original. at a guess id say the ones on yors are a better quality ... if they work id be keeping them. brake wise, think id replace the rear canti with a v brake to match the front.... it would have been fitted with cantis all round originally. will you be repainting the frame ? im guessing you are not aiming for OEM spec.

Re:

Thanks Enc, I didn't see the bit at the bottom of the oem spec for the shock

I'm not sure what to do about originality. I'm currently not a rider and this bike has no sentimental value to me so part of me thinks I should do whatever I want to it, but, I'm aware they're not building any more of these bikes so I shouldn't change it too much as I'm sure there's someone out there that would very much like an original one of these bikes.....I'm just a custodian after all

I will say at present I really dislike the colour. I think this might be because this bike just doesn't look good at the minute, so it'd look bad whatever colour it was. I've seen a few other '95 Cinder Cones on here that have been looked after/rebuilt and thought they looked exceptional

Maybe I should go all original to try and preserve the bike, or maybe I should repaint it but use original components, that way the next owner can have an original bike again with a simple colour change

Hmmmmmm

Re:

Thanks buddy

Has this bike been improved or downgraded compared to the original spec?

I've seen a few other people say the same thing as you about this being the best spec'd CC
