New Project-2004 Giant DS2 Warp

Picked up at a local Goodwill online aution for $16.00 USD. 2004(?) Giant DS 2 Warp 20.5" frame size is why I bid on it.
I was wanting a new project and this looks like a easy, cheap one. New grips, remove the stem extender, and change stem to start.
The pedals look like they fold (?). I will probably replace those too.
Might make a good desert trail cruiser or loaner bike. We'll see if it remains in the stable...

They were quite well rated if I recall.

Pedals, cut the steerer, and get some cheap hydraulic brakes on. All sorted

So I started working on it last night. First thing I found was the rear freehub was just spinning. I spent about 30 minutes flushing with WD-40 and applying heat with a hair drier and I got it freed up and working again. Will reinstall axle and grease bearings tonite.
I have new grips ordered. I removed the stem riser adapter and now have a new top cap set coming.
I have parts bin aluminum flat pedals to replace the resin folding pedals.

I flipped the bike over and found the bottom cap missing on the FD shifter. 🫤. I think these are Vintage Shimano SL-MC38?

Not going to be messing with the shifters. I could probably spend the time, and a bunch ot cleaner, to maybe get them working again but the time/effort vs cost of new just isn't worth my time.

Still trying to decide on what shifters I want to use. I do know I don't want a shifter/brake lever combo.Considering the Shimano SL-MC38 and the microShift TS39-8 Thumb Tap Trigger Shifters.
I don't particularly like the gear indicator windows though. Used set of the SL-MC38 is more than getting new.
I think I have a set of XT thumb shifters out in the garage. I'd have to check the part number to see if they are 7 spd. It's said they can work with 8 speed.
Amazon has a basic set of full friction thumbies that would work and are inexpensive. Quick and easy to set up.

Tonight I decided to flush out the shifters before placing an order for a new pair. Suprisingly they started working after only a coulple of flushes with WD-40.
I suppose I can run the F/D shifter without a bottom cover with no issues besides aesthetics?

Just have to hook up front and rear derailleur cables and It should be ready for a maiden ride.

Also, just found the rear shock mount bolt nylock nut is stripped. Easy replacement piece.
