Evening all,
Well I’ve certainly got the bug back! Took the old girl to the south coat this weekend and covered 30 miles of the South Downs way on Saturday, and another 10 today. Mostly gravel/flint tracks with a a fair few steep uphills and descents.
The bike was faultless, however I took it easy, due to the forks needing a service, and the brake pads being past their best, it still held its own against the modern stuff. I even got a nod from Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) as I overtook him on a climb.
A few things I will address over the coming weeks:
Fork service- the MCU’s (elastomers) ordered, along with fork grease. Will drop them and give them a going over. Hope the damper still holds oil. Are they easy to refill? Also any ideas where to get new seals etc from? (97 Judy XC’s)
Brake pads-ordered. Might have a look at reducing the pay in the linkages (I read this is a common issue on XT v brakes?
I also notice one of the V brake Allen bolts (bolts through the brake into the fork) has been rounded off at some point..does any one have a spare?
I will probably swap out the original Specialized Kevlar tyres with some modern rubber..I’m thinking about the repop Smoke and Darts, unless anyone else has any good suggestions?
All in all, I can’t complain, it was reasonably cheap, it’s tidy, but not too tidy I don’t want to use it, and the most important thing-it’s brilliant fun!
