Could be they moved to needing longer bottom bracket length now, did it stick to far out ? OR was it just that it hit the teeth on the rings ?
Would need to check but the LBS should know that before they tried to fit it.
You'll be running a 110 or 113 type 'E' bottom bracket.
You can of course buy a new bottom bracket making sure it's 'E' spec ('E' is for your front mech position but that's more cost.
Anyway rings could just be swapped (modern alivio whatever number that is.
If you cannot get the rings or cannot get MC40 then there are plenty other older chainsets that sit on a 110/113 bottom bracket, just check before you buy.
