N+zero

I'm a bit of a hoarder after 60+ bikes/frames, but without buying them I'd be lost on the topic of what is a must to keep and what can be easily chucked away, however truly valuable infos can be found around here...seeing/touching is believing I guess.

But lessons are learnt anyway (in some cases the hard way), so I try to keep about 20-25 nice ones in the stable, the rest will be fodder of the salvage yard or up for sale.

Most of my bikes aren't exactly exotic models, but looking at the recent new(er) offerings on the market  , I consider myself lucky to have them (mostly 2,2 kg or lighter, sub. 2 kg 18-19" steel/titanium frames, with LX,XT XT, XTR, XC Pro suff) :xmas-cool: .

The space isn't a limiting factor now, but keeping the inventory (at least in my mind, what's I do have & I don't) up to date, well, it's an entirely different matter as I tend to buy parts which I already have, sometimes more than one on the shelf in boxes  ..

Re:

I find I tend to ride the larger frames much more frequently meaning some get out less than once a year.

I don’t think that’s ok?

When I was in the city I’d nip out on the scott for example but it’s less comfy for longer country rides...

Re:

If you have 2 very similar bikes ride them back to back and decide your fave- other one goes.

Split and keep the bits you really want, or even split and keep the whole thing in a box for the time being, if you miss it, rebuild. If not, start selling parts.

A dismantled, boxed bike takes up almost no room compared to an assembled one!
That's why i have at least 5 dismantled bikes in the attic. As well as another 14 or 15 fully assembled and ready to go.

Split and keep the bits you really want,

This is not bad advice.

I’m not sure I could ever sell a set of Cooks.

I know they aren’t the rarest but they have to be kept.

And anything Machine Tech...

“Is it better to have loved and lost than never loved at all?”

I got rid of a lot of things I now regret back when I worked in a shop and I thought ‘easy come, easy go’. Now have about 15 in various states of usefulness ( largely handbuilt) but nothing really (Retro) special

Re:

I've now got rid of almost everything and I'm down to 6, that's two road bikes, two MTBs and 2 commuters. In each case one for best and one for when the going gets grotty or when I need to lend a visitor a ride.
