It's not a Muddy Fox, despite what the PO thought, and the similarity with same age MF geometry and (Courier) components.
I confess to getting a bit obsessive-compulsive about finding the answer to this puzzle and today, Googling '1988 mountain bike Suntour' threw up some pictures, one of which showed a bike with...
Tig welded frame with shot in seat stays
Aqua frame colour
Suntour XCD 4050 gears and Dia Compe brakes
Sugino crankset
Araya rims and Sansin hubs
And this bike was... a 1988 Specialized Hardrock
So that's it. Now to decide what to do with it. Full Cromoly and a well made frame with decent bits for a 'low end' bike. Can't imagine anyone would have off the shelf decals for it but it's given me something to ponder. A local shop stocked Specialized in 1988 and I even remember having the catalogue (viewtopic.php?f=9&t=78133) that confirms the details.
