Mystery Kona ID. Can any experts help. S/N SF20211578

I picked up this "Kona Kula" very cheap in rough shape. I suspected it had been resprayed since the flat grey colour doesn't match any Kona Kula I can find.

When I got it home and started to strip it I am beginning to doubt if it is a Kula although I am confident that the frame is a Kona, it very much matches the pattern of Kona of around 97. It has clealy been left outside for a while and the rust is pretty bad in places but fortunately the frame doesn't suffer from that.
I doubt if the components will give too many clues because it looks a bit of a mismash. It came with 7 speed XT rear mech and shifters that work nicely, an LX front mech and crank and pretty ordinary looking Shimano v brakes. The stem and bars are not standard and pretty rough but the seat post is Kona.
The wheel are newish basic Shimano and the tyres are newish Mountain Kings which are nice.
The main reason a bought it was that it came with P2 with a long steerer for the 20 inch frame and I have now checked and they are triple butted but BIG disappointment that instead of the 235mm steererI had hoped for to put on my Explosif, it has an extender and the steerer is only 155mm . But the bike cost less than those forks are asking on eBay.
So my question is do any of the Kona experts have any thoughts.
The serial number is SF20211578 which is supposed to mean either 1992 or 2002 I thought but it is clearly neither of those.
I have attached various photos to help.
Thanks

Thanks but I'd ruled out that since the 2002 frame in he catalogue has a different looking frame around the rear drop outs. Also I could be wrong but don't the aluminium Konas of 2002 have disc brake mounts. This frame has no disc brake mounts.

I'm not convinced it's a Kona tbh (watch me get proven wrong!)

Rear mech hanger doesn't look right, and the headtube is way long with funky geometry when you compare to the seat-tube. Welds don't look great either but I'm not an alu kona expert (my knowledge is limited to the 1997 Lava Dome and 1998 Kilauea that were once in the stable)

Actually yes, sorry. Makes sense looking deeper. It does looks similar to the 2002 Kula but having looked through the catalogues I'm not 100% sure it is a Kona.
The headtube is too long to match any I've seen

Looking at the welding and shape of tubes around the rear drop out it looks very similar to the Kona 7005 aluminium frame rather than the Easton one but the look is very similar to Kona frames, even down the the two holes at the back of the drop out. The welding looks fine to me.

TBH though I would be quite happy if it is not a Kona so I can ditch the frame and keep the wheels, mechs, shifters and forks for other builds. And I have just found out the BB has dodgy threads. IMG_2289.webp

Do you have the frame - if so has it got a serial number? There'll be a Kona-head somewhere who can possibly interpret it.

Lots of the old catalogues online here and on issu to back ref and check.

It's in the original post. SF20211578
I've been trying to cross ref with the catalogues too.
