My thinking about going 9spd became a forced reality. On my usual Wednesday night ride this week my rear gripshift changer housing disintegrated.

I located some 2nd hand XT trigger shifters at the LBSand fitted a new chain and 9spd cassete, was also a good opportunity to give my drive drain a well needed clean. feels like a new bike and ive gained a gear.

Am enjoying this old ride so much that I'm putting the dually shopping on hold until I return to some sembalance of fitness

Well that Bikepedia thing is definitely wrong in at least one respect
BB width is 73mm, 100% sure

Odd, Bikepedia doesn't know for 1995, claims 73mm only for 1996 M2 Stumpies, then changes to 68mm for '97 and '98.

She's a nice one! Reminds me of my own Stumpy M2 from the same period - will post some pics once she's had her (badly needed) respray this winter!

i have some of those cranks but cant find a bb for them - what length is your spindle?

My BB which came with those cranks has a 107mm spindle.

Bikepedia are just guessing I reckon, not sure when they changed to 68mm probably with the M4

Dead certain on the M2, have had three of them and still got two, one of which had a new BB installed last week.

Got a 97-98 Rockhopper and that's 73mm too

I meant to ask you, how does that chainset work with a 9-speed setup? I am having similar thoughts...

Has been a few 100k with the new 9 spd and no issues whatsoever, rear changes sweet and so does front, I ran some emery cloth over all the chainring teeth to rid and scrathes or burrs and all is good.

Also fitted some 100mm Rockshox recons last night. I noticed i was only getting about 20mm travel out of the SX after all the sag.
