my self extracting bolt is tearing apart the threading .....

Re: my self extracting bolt is tearing apart the threading .

You could try a small punch or even a nail in one of the holes and tap it out with a hammer.

Good luck :)

Just thinking about it again, make sure you tighten the bolt before trying to loosen the cap, any tension between the two is just going to make it more difficult.

Re: my self extracting bolt is tearing apart the threading .

If your near Manchester then I have a crank puller tool.

well, finally I digged an old VAR pin spanner out of my tool box which had a small box of spare pins - and I digged the correct size out
that's what happens when you have got too many tools - you forget what you have  ,
I unscrewed the cap, removed the bolt
I screwed at max the crankpuller and  the crank won't budge - the crankpuller yes

the threading is dead and the regular crankpuller won't save me :(

so will have to find a lbs with the appropriate tool to operate - will look at this steiner stuff

bad luck I am in a suburb of Paris in Froggland  thanks for the offer all the same

Re: my self extracting bolt is tearing apart the threading .

Heat the crank, but don't melt it………. stick two hard wooden wedges between it and the BB and give them a good tap. That may force it off the axel.

Re: my self extracting bolt is tearing apart the threading .

I think I've tried every way of removing a crank with a hammer and piece of wood. Nothing has ever worked!
It needs to be pulled off evenly from all sides.
Heat could work (as above) but anodising doesn't really like lots of it.

Re: my self extracting bolt is tearing apart the threading .

Two wedges, one on each side of the axel under the crank shoulder. Tap one then the other. If you use only one it will only cock the crank on the axel and you'll never get it off.

You could also use two hammers, one in each hand if you can do that without missing.

Re: my self extracting bolt is tearing apart the threading .

You could try an old school well made steering wheel puller.

If it was me, at this point I'd just pop a 6mm HSS in the electric drill and drill the crank close to the taper hole. It will be ugly, but using a power tool and intermittent swearing will make you feel a better.

Re: my self extracting bolt is tearing apart the threading .

I've freed ally bits off steel using a hot air paint stripper. Make a shield to keep it off the paint. Torque up the extractor and heat till it pops.
