I used to ride as a schoolboy/junior for the Archer Road Club in the mid 80's. The club was based in Acton West London and a few years after I was there one Bradley Wiggins got his cycling start there. I think his name is probably a decade or so after mine on the schoolboy trophy. He was way faster I am sure. Archer were sponsored by Saba and I still have my brown and yellow skin suit with Saba branding in the attic on it. Saba was a bike importer based out of Woolwich dock yards. He had the UK distribution rights for Viner, Modolo and also imported Cinelli alongside the main distrubutor. There were a load of other brands he did as well. I went down the warehouse one day with my pocket money to buy a set of modolo speedys for 13 quid. (funny what sticks with you). It was like walking into Aladdins Cave. So all the Saba frames were actually made by Viner. At that time they were all Columbus SL or Aelle ( I cannot remember if that was the lower end columbus at the time or if there was an earlier version). I do not know if any Saba's were 531 but Viner used to build using 531 in the late seventies. The paint finishes were a bit dull on the Saba's so most of the club rode brown and yellow Viners. If you look at the inside of the fork crown on a Saba you will see the card suit's there. Thats a Viner thing and was on all there frames. SO I've attached a couple of images of my Saba that I picked up a few years ago which by the gear channels I think is late 70's early 80's. They were mostly campag builds in the day but I am going for a Ofmega Mistral build with Modolo brakes (not sure the FIR brakes in the Mistral groupset were that great!) as most of my bikes are campag and I fancy doing something a bit different. Just waiting for a couple of parts to turn up on ebay and its off for a spray in a nice pearl green with a yellow turbo saddle and tape. Hope that adds a bit of colour to your rebuild!!!
Btw anyone have a 56/57 Saronni frame or a Saba panto stem around 110 they want to sell!!!
I always try and get my decals from the guy in Australia. They are a bit pricy but his quality is far better then the vinyl ones that are also on ebay. Not sure of the technical process but they go on a lot cleaner whats an extra 20 on a respray thats close to 200. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Saba-set-of- ... xyVaBS20II
I think I will either use Mario Vaz as I am down in London. But might do Mercian. I used to use colourtech in dartford but it took forever to get the frames back and it was great but not perfect.
I think I will aim to put it in over the winter and build next spring.
Just thinking about the final parts and also whether I bling it up a bit with some gold modolo brakes!!!! This is the colour I am going for. The standard saba paint was a bit dull for me and did not really do an Italian frame justice.

Nice green. Should work well with yellow graphics...
I'm based in south London so maybe we can get a saba owners ride sorted next year!
I'm hoping to get mine done this summer but current plans are a bit thwarted.
I'll update in due course.
I was gonna go Modolo on the brakes and splash out on some Prefessionals but the scarcity of 919 lever hoods NOS or repro put me off so Super Record it is.
